CircleU Collaboration on GenAI and Culturally Competent Communication
Advancing AI for Inclusive Multilingual and Multicultural Clinical Contexts

Since January 2023, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Dr. Shuangyu Li through the CircleU alliance on the interdisciplinary project Transcending Multilingualism and Multiculturalism, running through November 2024. My contribution focused on the use of artificial intelligence, particularly the ethical, practical, and communicative challenges in applying AI tools responsibly.
Our collaboration has since extended beyond the project, leading to two exciting preprints exploring GenAI-driven chatbot design for culturally competent communication and several student poster presentations:
- Co-Designing a Chatbot for Culturally Competent Clinical Communication: Experience and Reflections by me and Shuangyu Li.
- Developing Culturally Competent Clinical Communication through GenAI Simulation by Shuangyu Li and me.
- Mitigating cultural and linguistic discordance: A Gen AI-powered training on culturally competent clinical communication presented at the UK Conference for Clinical Communication in Undergraduate Medical Education, Moving Towards Mastery: Learning from Miscommunication (Abstract No. 9) by Shuangyu Li, me, Snehal Dhebri, Shrikhushi Reddy, Brittany Kurti, and Olivia Turpin.
- Reflections on the Use of AI Within Cultural Consultations to Develop Cultural Competency as Medical Students presented at the Developing Your Portfolio 2025 conference held in Macherster, March 2025 by Brittany Kurti, Shuangyu Li, and me.
- Mitigating Cultural and Linguistic discordance–A Gen AI-Powered Training on Culturally Competent Clinical Communication presented at London Medical Schools Research Conference held in London in April 2025, by Shuangyu Li, me, Snehal Dhebri, Shrikhushi Reddy, Brittany Kurti, and Olivia Turpin.
These works explore both opportunities and risks of AI in sensitive environments.
Looking Forward
We aim to continue this line of research with a focus on simulation-based training, participatory design, and ethical governance of GenAI systems. Stay tuned for upcoming publications!
